From their first speech during Term 1 Schola Brevis, student council co-presidents Cece Watson and Ryan Akin made their message clear: “We are Marist.”
Throughout the first half of their presidency, this initiative has stood strong. The slogan is heard on their announcements and found on their posters. It has made an appearance on stickers and even retractable lanyards. But how did such a simple but meaningful slogan begin?
Every pair of co-presidents choose a theme for the year. Ryan and Cece wanted a theme “that would encompass the entire Marist community and everyone at this school,” the duo explained. Celebrating the many backgrounds, traditions, and personalities of the student body, “We Are Marist” reminds us that “each student plays a role in shaping the Marist Way,” said the presidents.
Cece and Ryan take their message in stride as they make speeches and run pep rallies, but their roles are even more involved than seen at first glance as they constantly work behind the scenes to make our student body feel appreciated. By filming segments for MBC, hanging posters all around campus and for the student section at games, and beginning the Do-It cheer, Cece and Ryan have gone the extra mile to boost morale.
“It has been exciting to feel that buzz in the air when something big is happening” they elaborated. Throughout the year, Ryan and Cece have seen the importance of cheering on our student body in their extracurricular activities. “We are grateful to have played a small role in encouraging that spirit alongside the students who show up and make it happen,” said the pair.
As we approach the halfway point of the school year, Cece and Ryan are continuing to spread the “We Are Marist” spirit and are thankful for all those who suggest ideas and collaborations.
The co-presidents shared their gratitude for these participants. “When our community works together, we help make Marist feel like home,” they said.
We are excited to see what the new year brings for Stu-Co!
